Abubacar Sultan
_ The
war in Mozambique influenced Sultan to travel across the country and
rescue the children of war between the ages of six and thirteen. This
war took place between 1985 until 1992 , it left many children orphaned
and displaced that were forcibly put into combat. Mr.Sultan got involved
because he saw that children soldiers were being captured by government
forces and many were shot in combat. He couldn’t finish his teacher
training at the university when he knew bad things were happening in his
country, and that is when he decided that he needed to do something. A
seven-year old changed his life. “ The boys family was shot in front of
him and cut to pieces. he shared with me the worst moments of his young
life”. At the point Mr.Sultan had a turning point because he felt for
the kid and his emotions.
Mr.Sultan has accomplished the training of five hundred people in community based therapies, and reunited over 4,000 children with their families.”You see, once you give people the opportunity to express their potential, many problems can be solved”. He provided a Save the Children Program, which was to help victims with psychological and social help but failed because they did not have the necessary resources. It was really hard for him to confront this problem because of the things that he wished to do could put his life in danger because it was things he was not suppose to do.
At home, Mr.Sultan had two kids who he really didn’t spend time with more than two or three days a month .He felt the need to sacrifice some of his privileges knowing others were in danger. He Hopes that someday children can be treated like children again. Even today he still continues to help children by concentrating on community education and children’s rights through his initiative Wona Sahaka. “ The struggle is far from being over, and despite the end of the war, there is an ongoing war to improve children’s rights and welfare”
